In 1957, members of the Clatsop Tillamook Chapter of the Oregon Educational Association voted to form a credit union. Clatsop-Tillamook Teachers Federal Credit Union received its organization certificate October 31, 1957.
The certificate indicated that the par value of the shares of this credit union shall be $5.00, with the original field of membership limited to public school employees who work in Clatsop and Tillamook counties, employees of the credit union, members of their immediate families and organizations of such persons.
The original location on the Charter lists Seaside, Oregon, possibly the address of one of the founders, but was not specifically stated. Shortly thereafter the credit union operated out of the garage of Chet and Ada Gillam in Manhatten Beach, now known as Rockaway Beach, Oregon.
In 1964 a merger of Clatsop-Tillamook Teachers Federal Credit Union and Civil Service Credit Union located in Astoria, Oregon, took place. The name was then changed to Clatsop-Tillamook Teachers and Public Employees Federal Credit Union, with an Astoria office located in the basement of the United States Postal Service at 8th and Commercial Street. In the late 1970’s the Astoria office moved up to the main floor of the Astoria Post Office and maintained a mailing address of P.O. Box 101, Astoria, Oregon. In 1981 the credit union built and moved to 2223 Marine Drive, Astoria and in May 2002 they remodeled and moved to their current location at 85 W Marine Drive.
The Tillamook county office moved from Chet’s garage in 1972, to a newly constructed office located on Highway 101 in Rockaway, using the mailing address of P.O. Box 517, Rockaway, Oregon. By 1978, the credit union relocated to leased office space in the Maple Leaf Complex at 2310 First Street, Suite #3, in Tillamook. In November of 1986, the credit union completed and moved to their current location at 2101 5th Street, Tillamook. In 2005 property was purchased on 3rd and Elm to eventually build a new headquarters.
The Seaside branch opened at 712 S Holladay Drive in February of 1988 and relocated to their present location at 575 S Roosevelt Drive, Suite A, in May of 1995.
On June 30, 1988, Clatsop-Tillamook Teachers and Public Employees Federal Credit Union merged with Lincoln County Credit Union and changed its name to Tillamook-Lincoln-Clatsop Counties Public Employees Federal Credit Union using the acronym TLC, which resulted in a formal name change to TLC Federal Credit Union.
Our new Lincoln county branch was located in Toledo at 165 NE Highway 20, moving to the Baybridge Mall in April of 1990 and then to 1164 SW Coast Highway, Newport, Oregon. They moved December of 1993 to 215 E Olive Street, Newport and in late 2003 purchased land on Highway 101 to build a new branch that included leased space. TLC moved to its current location at 1625 N Coast Hwy in June of 2005 to occupy 4000 square feet with leased space of 6000.
On June 30, 1993, TLC merged with Astoria Plywood Federal Credit Union to gain an additional 500 members.
In January of 1996, TLC opened its fifth branch in Lincoln City at 2015 NW 39th Street, Suite 201. In January 2003 we purchased land and in September began construction of a new branch in Lincoln City that included leased space. We moved into the 9000 square foot building at 2004 NW 36th St. in January 2004, occupying 4000 square feet.
In March of 2003 TLC was granted a community charter from NCUA, which enabled anyone who lives, works or worships in Tillamook, Lincoln and Clatsop counties to join TLC Federal Credit Union.
Chet Gillam retired as Manager in January of 1975 and William Yetter accepted the Manager’s position until 1993. Our current CEO, Mike Pierce, was hired May 9, 1994.
